ADDC 500 Fundamentals and Theoretical Approaches to Treatment of Substance Use Disorders

This course will investigate historical and cultural attitudes towards various types of addictions, the physical, psychological, social, emotional and spiritual factors surrounding addiction, including the concept of addiction as a disease. The clinical manifestations of both prevention and treatment will be examined. The course will provide an emphasis on understanding modalities of treatment and care for diverse populations affected by substance abuse issues. Relevant state and federal legislation and the role of culture will also be discussed. The course also explores a variety of helping strategies for reducing the negative effects of substance use, abuse, dependence and addictive disorders.
