RELI 203 Religion and Pop Culture: Methods and Theories in the Study of Religion

This course introduces students to various methods and theories in the study of religion and directly applies these methods and theories to depictions of religion(s) that originate in popular culture. Throughout this course, students will study the history of the word “religion” and how this field of study developed in multidisciplinary ways. Students will gain new understandings of ways in which humans have sought meaning and purpose historically, continuing to the present day—while primarily being guided by the questions, “What is religion?” and “What qualities and characteristics qualify someone/something as religious?” Each semester’s course will present Religious Studies methodologies through a particular pop culture lens.
