Honors Program

Honors Program Mission

The UF Honors Program engages exceptional students in a challenging yet rewarding curriculum that encourages deeper and broader thinking about a wide range of topics. Our program supports independently mentored scholarly and creative works through an innovative and interdisciplinary learning environment. We value individual development while encouraging independent exploration towards academic excellence.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Honors Program, a student must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. A high school cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.80 or above or an ACT composite score of 27 or higher or equivalent SAT score of 1820;
  2. One semester of full-time enrollment or 12 hours of credit at The University of Findlay with a total cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher; or
  3. One semester of full-time enrollment and a total cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher earned from another regionally accredited institution.

Advancing to Candidacy

Once Honors students complete HNRS 195 and have been enrolled at The University of Findlay as full-time students for at least one semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.50, students will be invited to advance to candidacy and become Honors Candidates. Honors students who advance to candidacy have shown their commitment to the Honors Program at the University of Findlay and have demonstrated the academic prowess to meet the Honors Program standards. Honors Candidates may be eligible for additional benefits offered to Honors students.

Graduation Requirements

At commencement, students meeting all requirements for the Honors Program will be recognized by designation as an Honors Scholar in their chosen field of study. Students achieving this honor will wear The University of Findlay’s bachelor’s hood. Successful completion requires the following:

Honors Contract Courses

Honors contract courses require approval from the instructor as well as the Honors Executive Board. Approved Honors contract courses may be from any major, elective, or general education course with an additional Honors component. Students using Honors contract courses to satisfy the elective option must enroll in HNRS 375 and will receive one credit hour for the course. Students are able to enroll in HNRS 375 multiple times towards their Honors electives. Students using Honors contract courses must meet the minimum grade expectation for the host course, as well as successfully complete the additional Honors component.

Benefits

All students in the Honors Program will have access to the Honors Executive Board members to facilitate course registration, answer questions, and assist in successfully completing the program requirements. Additional benefits and opportunities may be available to students who advance to candidacy. At commencement, students meeting all requirements for the Honors Program will be recognized by designation as an Honors Scholar in their chosen field of study. Students achieving this honor will wear The University of Findlay’s bachelor’s hood during the commencement ceremony. Students will receive a copy of their Honors Thesis signed by members of the Honors Executive Board.

Good Standing in the Honors Program

In order to remain in good standing in the Honors Program, Honors candidates must maintain a cumulative University GPA of 3.50 and a satisfactory designation in all Honors courses. In addition, students must follow the recommended timeline so all Honors Program requirements can be completed within the expected timeframe. Honors candidates failing to remain in good standing will be dismissed from the Honors Program.

Dismissal from the Honors Program

A student will be dismissed from the Honors Program if any of the following conditions are met:

  1. A student fails to progress in the Honors Curriculum in a timely fashion. Students should enroll in a minimum of one HNRS course per academic year to remain on track.
  2. A student in the Honors Program fails to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50.
  3. A student fails to receive a satisfactory grade in any HNRS course.
  4. Students in the Honors Program are expected to act with integrity and to follow the University’s Academic Integrity policies. Therefore, an Honors student will be dismissed from the Honors Program if a student is found guilty of any instance of academic dishonesty, regardless of severity.

Reinstatement Following Dismissal

Students are capable of reapplying for Honors Candidacy one time during their academic tenure. Students who wish to reapply to the program must submit a formal request to the Director(s) of the Honors Executive Board. The formal request to be reinstated as an Honors Candidate must include a plan of how the student will complete the necessary requirements. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that all Honors deadlines are met, if the student wishes to be reinstated.

Resignation from the Honors Program

Students who no longer wish to participate in the Honors Program may choose to resign from the Program. Students considering resignation must notify the Director(s) of the Honors Executive Board.
