Leave of Absence

Students occasionally must suspend their studies for a variety of reasons. Students who wish to interrupt their studies at the end of a program-enrollment period, but plan to return to The University of Findlay, must complete and have approved a formal request for a leave of absence in order to maintain matriculated status. A student enrolled in a program that requires completion of coursework during the summer who wishes a temporary absence will need to utilize the Leave of Absence policy if he/she does not wish to attend during a fall, spring, or summer enrollment period. A student enrolled in a program that does not require completion of coursework during the summer will only need to complete a Leave of Absence Form if he/she wishes to not enroll during a fall or spring enrollment period.

Students choosing to take a leave of absence should first contact their academic advisor and/or student success advisor to discuss the implications of sitting out of classes for a period of time. In addition, students receiving financial aid are encouraged to also consult with a financial aid counselor, as well as a representative from Business Affairs, prior to submitting a Leave of Absence Form to ensure understanding of the financial consequences of a temporary leave of absence. Students enrolled in an online program should submit their completed Leave of Absence Form to the Director of Online Operation for consideration. All other students should submit their completed Leave of Absence Form to the Oiler Success Center for consideration. This policy allows the above listed directors to approve an initial leave of absence for one block or one semester depending on the program. Students who wish to receive an extension beyond the initial leave of absence must submit an additional Leave of Absence Form to the appropriately designated University representative for consideration. The request for a continued leave of absence must be submitted prior to the expiration of the initially approved leave of absence.

If an initial leave of absence or an extension of a leave of absence is approved, students returning prior to the expiration of their leave of absence may resume classes without reapplying to the institution. If a student’s return occurs after the approved leave of absence, or, after a year of absence, he/she will need to reapply to the institution following the University-established processes for readmission.

Students who have taken a leave of absence for two years will need to reapply for admission under the current catalog requirements.
