EDUC 219 Phonics and Foundations of Literacy
This course examines the developmental process of learning to read. Neural, perceptual, cognitive, and linguistic processes involved with reading will be discussed as these relate to how humans move from printed text to comprehension. The roles of phonics and phonological awareness play in literacy development will be a focus. Other essential elements of literacy including vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension will be addressed. Current research will be applied to designing and practicing evidence-based assessment, instruction, and intervention. This course covers all relevant state and federal mandates.
