ENGL 355 Writing on Public Issues for Civic Engagement

This course explores the application of composing texts designed to serve public interest, foster civic engagement, and promote positive social change. Students will be able to choose issues and interests on which to write, including but not limited to such topics as safety and health, political engagement, environmental issues, animal rights, the arts, and human rights. The course readings and assignments will emphasize the relationship among publics, non-profits, and policies, focusing on writing that facilitates communication among individuals, organizations, and governments. Students will gain insight into the ethics of public writing and consider how writing and revision can develop both the reader’s and the writer’s understanding of complex public issues.
